Overview:
A former Portuguese
enclave, and now a
Union Territory, Daman
and Diu are destinations
of breeze and beauty.
An exquisitely beautiful
getaway with golden
sand beaches, dense
palm-groves and historical
monuments sans commercial
exploitation and environmental
degradation they make
for a perfect and
fun filled holiday
to India.
Daman is a tiny little
area sandwiched between
the State of Maharashtra,
Gujarat and the Arabian
Sea. It is blessed
with the very best
natural resources
and beauty that God
can possess. Daman
prides itself on its
rich and varied historical
heritage covering
more than 2 millenniums.
Daman is filled with
history and every
stone encloses within
itself, silent and
mute a glorious tale,
be it from a fort
or a monument or a
ruin. Blessed with
an affable climate
and people Daman is
an ideal place for
tourists without any
climatic restrictions.
There is a popular
amusement park on
the beach, which is
illuminated on festive
days. At Moti Daman,
the massive fort,
the stately Light
house, gardens, historic
monuments and ancient
Gothic style churches,
are the key places
of interest. At Nani
Daman, the Nani Daman
Fort and the church
inside, and the fishing
jetty where boats
are anchored, are
worth paying a visit.
The Jampore beach
is a favourite with
swimming - enthusiasts.
Diu
is situated off the
Saurashtra coast of
Gujarat bordering
Junagadh district.
It was a seaport and
naval base of considerable
strategic importance
from the 14th to 16th
Centuries. It was
also a vital trade
link with the rest
of India for traders
overseas. Diu stands
out, in marked contrast
to other places, as
a tiny island, where
people have an excellent
civic sense. With
the magnificent serenity
of its ambience, it
is perhaps one of
India’s last undiscovered
jewels. The coast
has limestone cliffs,
rocky caves and sandy
beaches, the best
of which are at Nagoa
which could well be
one of the best beaches
of the world. The
other equally beautiful
beaches are Ahmedpur,
Mandvi, Chakratirath,
Jallandhar, and Gomtimata
all having their own
charm and thrill.
The administration
has provided water-sports
facilities as well
for the adventure
lovers. Diu can boast
of several historical
monuments which are
imposing in architecture
and design. The Church
and the Museum surrounded
by gardens, parks
and fountains have
been created around
the monuments to beautify
them.
