Overview:
Flanked between the
states of Maharashtra
and Gujarat in the
Western part of India,
this tiny Union Territory
of Dadra and Nagar
Haveli is not less
than a paradise for
those who are looking
for a tranquil holiday.
It is a land of spell-binding
beauty where lush
green forests, waterfronts,
mountain range, flora
and fauna are all
found in abundance.
This quiet, magical
land of 72 villages
has a chequered history.
For a century and
half, the fiery Portuguese
were the masters of
the land. The Indian
nationalist volunteers
liberated Dadra and
Nagar Haveli in July
1954 and a pro-India
administration was
formed. Under the
10th Amendment to
the Constitution,
the territories of
Dadra and Nagar Haveli
became a centrally
administered union
territory with effect
from August 11, 1961.
The
territory is the homeland
of hospitable, kind,
unselfish native tribal
groups including the
Varlis, Dublas, Dhodias,
and Koknans who have
enriched the culture
of the land with their
own customs of folklore
and colourful lifestyle.
A performance of Tarpa
dance, Mask dance
or Bhavada will surely
mesmerize you with
foot-tapping beats
and music intoxicating
the entire ambience.
Their vibrant lifestyle
are simply bewitching.
This area of 491 sq.kms
is the home land of
nearly one lakh people
of various tribes.
It has seen many rulers,
ranging from the mighty
Marathas to the fiery
Portuguese. Yet, the
essence of tribal
life, its richness
and variety, its art,
myth, song and folklore,
have all remained
unchanged.
